His writing journey started at the age of ten because of Mrs. Staples, a great school librarian, and something called The Young Authors Club. Because of his love of Sherlock Holmes stories he started writing short mysteries and then Lorne changed to romance from a male perspective. He enjoyed books written by the likes of Nick Hornby's High Fidelity and Karen Brichoux's Coffee and Kung Fu.
While in PEI, thanks to his wife, Lorne had the opportunity to interview several members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. It gave him the chance to write a story based on the idea he had for a long time of showing the officer chasing down a serial killer while letting the reader see how a little kid could grow up to be a monster. Braxton can't lay claim to wanting to be a writer all his life, although his mother and seventh grade English teacher were convinced he had what it would take. A bachelor's degree in Bio-Medical Engineering led to medical school and a residency in Emergency Medicine. He served for a decade in the U.S. Army Medical Corps with tours such as the Chief, Emergency Medical Services at Fort Campbell, KY and as a research Flight Surgeon at Fort Rucker, AL. Who had time to write?
By the 1990's, as a civilian, his professional and family life had settled down, somewhat, and his mother once again took up her mantra, "Write a book. You're a good writer." In 1997, a writing contest for Valentine's Day in the local newspaper convinced him that maybe he could write fiction after all. The next fifteen years saw him learning the craft of writing through local writers' groups, seminars, critique groups and more.
Now, seventeen years after that first hesitant start, he has five novels published and can't find enough time to write as much as he'd like. As a Christian, he writes "true-life" Christian fiction (suspense and thrillers) that many call "cutting edge," as he's not afraid to take on such issues as human trafficking, racism, and more. His characters are real-life as well, right down to a little "salty" language. As such, his books are never likely to gain acceptance by the Christian Bookseller Association. Anya Lipska is married to a Pole who lived under Communism before coming to Britain in the early Eighties. "I could dimly recall seeing newsreel footage of men with Solidarnosc banners at dockyard gates," says Anya. "But his first-hand experience of living relatively recently under a repressive regime fascinated me. It was this that inspired me to write my first novel which, although rooted firmly in contemporary London has a plot that harks back to Poland's Solidarity era. It took me about a year to research it alongside the day job."
Originally trained as a journalist, Anya now writes and produces documentaries and drama documentaries. She has worked on an eclectic range of programmes from Panorama to Scrapheap Challenge, with a rich mix of subject matter, from Leonardo da Vinci to plane crashes, paleo-anthropology to Italian gardens with Monty Don. "I consider myself incredibly lucky to have such an interesting job," says Anya, 'It keeps me buzzing with ideas that I can work into my fiction. Having said that, there's nothing better than getting a few weeks off to write.
