When Jesse McDermitt retires from the Marine Corps at age 37, he has no idea what he will do for the rest of his life. He only knows he doesn't want to spend the coming winter anywhere cold. His greatest skill is killing people from up to a mile away and he knows there aren't many job opportunities in the civilian world for that.

However, he also knows his way around boats and has an old friend living free and easy in the Florida Keys. Being an experienced diver and angler, he immediately heads south toward Key West and the end of the road.

With a single comment, a waitress in a waterfront restaurant in north Key Largo shakes loose a long dormant dream and Jesse runs with it. With the help of friends, new and old, he buys just the right boat to live on and soon starts a part time charter business.

Danger lurks in the sleepy little town of Marathon, in the middle of the Florida Keys, as well as in the swamps of the Everglades. But danger doesn't expect to run into a man like Jesse. A man who will not only respond swiftly in facing it, but with a vengeance unexpected.

Author Description:
Stinnett grew up on the central east coast of Florida, in a small town called Eau Gallie. There he and his brothers explored the beaches, the Indian River Lagoon, the swamps along the St. Johns River and all the streams and creeks that flow into both. They explored on foot or by Jon-boat, sailboat, and canoe. At 16 he began exploring further outside of his hometown and soon found that long island chain at the southernmost tip of Florida commonly called "The Keys". It was 1974 and a great time to explore.

After graduating high school in 1977, Stinnett enlisted in the Marine Corps, which opened up a lot more exploration possibilities. He visited countries from northern Europe to the Far East, but returned to Florida after 4 years. Spending a lot of his free time scuba diving, sailing, surfing, and fishing, he also began to write, creating a few fiction short stories in the early eighties. He also compiled an extensive list of beach dive spots, while exploring the many shipwrecks along the Treasure Coast.

After his second failed marriage, he bought a sailboat and lived aboard it in Boot Key Harbor, in the Florida Keys. He also lived on Andros Island in the Bahamas and on Isla de Cozumel, in Mexico for short periods, working as a Divemaster.

Author Description:
Called a "YA rebel-author" by Kirkus Reviews, Barry Lyga has published twelve novels in various genres in his seven-year career, including the New York Times bestselling I Hunt Killers and his newest, Unsoul'd (for adults). His books have been or are slated to be published in nine different languages in North America, Australia, Europe, and Asia.

After graduating from Yale with a degree in English, Lyga worked in the comic book industry before quitting to pursue his lifelong love of writing. In 2006, his first young adult novel, The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl, was published to rave reviews, including starred reviews from Booklist and School Library Journal. Publisher's Weekly named Lyga a "Flying Start" in December 2006 on the strength of the debut.

His second young adult novel, Boy Toy, received starred reviews in SLJ, Publishers Weekly, and Kirkus. VOYA gave it its highest critical rating, and the Chicago Tribune called it "...an astounding portrayal of what it is like to be the young male victim." His third novel, Hero-Type, according to VOYA "proves that there are still fresh ideas and new, interesting story lines to be explored in young adult literature."

Since then, he has also written Goth Girl Rising (the sequel to his first novel), as well as the Archvillain series for middle-grade readers and the graphic novel Mangaman (with art by Colleen Doran).

His latest series is I Hunt Killers, called by the LA Times "one of the more daring concepts in recent years by a young-adult author" and an "extreme and utterly alluring narrative about nature versus nurture." The first book landed on both the New York Times and USAToday bestsellers lists, and the series has been optioned for television by Warner Bros./Silver Pictures.

Lyga lives and writes in New York City. His comic book collection is a lot smaller than it used to be, but is still way too big.
